We assiduously limit snacks to one a day.
This habit should be taught from a very young age. It is fair to say that our little ones eat with great appetite at dinner time, only if they’ve enjoyed one substantive and nutritive snack in the afternoon, once they get home after a long day at school. This approach to keep snacks to a minimum has helped my daughter eat with appetite when dinner is ready.
To keep food in rotation, I generally try to vary her afternoon snack, so that she can flavor different options. It’s generally a combination of fruits, pastries and/or dairy. One great idea that takes very little time to prepare are crispy baked apples chips. Any variety of apple will do great; although I use this time Granny Smith, as I had plenty in my fruit basket. Simply, slice them, place on a baking sheet/rack, lightly sprinkle brown sugar (optional), bake until crisp (15-20 minutes) at 350 degrees. You can make apple chips ahead of time. Of course. Apples chips (‘chips de pomme’) are different, healthy and fun to it.

Bottom line is that our young ones have a chance to enjoy a snack containing nutrients, fiber and very little empty calories.You may combine it with a piece of cheese, berries or any other fruit you choose. If you teach them from a very young age that snack time is only once a day, I guarantee you that little ones will be eagerly awaiting dinner time. Routinely. At home this practice really works. - Granny Smith Apples
- Brown sugar
- Peel and remove apple core. Cut into thin slices. Lay them flat on parchment paper and sprinkle with some brown sugar (optional). Bake at 350 degrees for 20 approx or until crisp.
