Very little history about this fine biscuit can be found, but what I know, it dates back to the 17th century. It is also believed that Pablo Picasso’s painting –Still Life with Biscuits – may well have featured langues de chat, which is currently located in the Cleveland Art Museum.

Langue de Chat are perfect as a teatime treat, or as a quick snack with our coffee.

And they are also perfect for our kids to enjoy with a fresh or warm frothy cup of milk. Delicious.

For those of you craving just a little bit of something mildly sweet, Langue de Chat are great.

You may decorate a scoop of your favorite ice cream with a Langue de Chat and it can even serve you as your own little edible spoon.

They can be flavored with lemon or orange zest, rose water, lavender or ground cardamom. Chocolate can be added to transpose them into a chocolatey treat.

A delicacy.

For bake time we only need 8 minutes, and for mixing about 5. Quick and easy.  So, as you wait for your friends or colleagues to arrive over the weekend or just for the kid’s goûter, get the oven going to (380 degrees F), combine the ingredients, flour a large flat oven tray and bake. Voila.

Try this for your little ones, and I’m sure you will get many compliments from them and from other moms, friends, family and neighbors.

The best part is the name, as little ones will quickly associate the shape and thinness of the biscuits with a cute little cat’s tongue.

Recipe adopted from Chef
  • 60 g butter
  • 60 g of powdered sugar
  • 60 g flour
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract or 1 sachet of vanilla sugar
  1. Work the butter to make it creamy, add sugar, vanilla and flour. Mix well. Stir in egg whites. Butter the baking and flour. Put the dough in a pocket sleeve. Roll dough sticks sufficiently spaced on the plate.
  2. Cook 7-8 minutes in hot oven (200 ° C).
